Arminius the Liberator deals with the complex modern reception of Arminius the Cheruscan; commonly called Hermann. Arminius inflicted one of their most devastating defeats on the Romans in the year 9 A.D. by annihilating three legions under the command of Quintilius Varus in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest; as it is generally if inaccurately called. This book traces the origin of the Arminius myth in antiquity and its political; artistic; and popular developments since the nineteenth century. The books central themes are the nationalist use and abuse of history and historical myth in Germany; especially during the Weimar Republic and National Socialism; the reactions to a discredited ideology involving Arminius in post-war Europe; and revivals of his myth in the United States. Special emphasis is on the representation of Arminius in visual media since the 1960s: from painting and theater to cinema; television; and computer animation.

Principles. and Skills is a textbook assigned for a Communications course on Listening. The most recent edition (5th) contains ten chapters that are written around the HURIER Model of Listening. which consists of six listening components to the overall process: hearing. understanding. remembering. interpreting. evaluating and responding. The opening chapter introduces the reader to the concept of effective listening. where the HURIER model is broken down. followed by chapters that are devoted to each HURIER model component. The author succeeds in threading each component together throughout each chapter without abandoning the reason why wersquo;re there in the first place. and yet. each chapter is a fresh journey. having its own terminology. and offering the reader/ student enjoyable. thought-provoking methods of learning. and ways of applying each construct in everyday life. This textbook is easily discernible and can be the centerpiece to a professional development program for those who work with the public. There is even some information over a couple of chapters on intercultural communication. For a group project my group was assigned this hypothetical listening group. and while doing research for this particular group. I realized that the textbook could have used more material / data based on this particular type of communication setting ndash; that of intercultural communication. and more specifically. intercultural listening.Brownell leaves us with two very interesting chapters which cover listening relationships and listening challenges. A textbook that has a lifetime of usefulness. on a scale of 1 though 5. with five being the highest. I would rate this book a score of 4. With more devoted to the intercultural listening setting. which includes all differences and diversity among people and not just cultural or geographical differences. The book was easy to read for some. and I imagine it was a challenge for some. also.
