0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. basically a French BritannicaBy CaraculiambroYoure looking at a 28-volume general encyclopedia in French. Its very similar to what the Encyclopedia Britannica would look like were it translated into French (lots of color plates and stuff). not that this is a translation or anything. Britannica is in fact the publisher. and for the last few years theyve been offering this on their website. The difficulty level. too. is about that of the Britannica: this is not a "learners" encyclopedia like Comptons or World Book. The articles go into much more detail than Colliers and would about be analogous to the depth and length of those youve sen in the Encyclopedia Americana. The look of the text on the page (the font and the font size. etc.) closely resembles the Britannica. though this encyclopedia is not divided into a Micropedia and a Macropedia.Note that the one I have. 2002. is complete in 28 volumes. There was another edition in 2004 (Im not sure how many volumes). and then one year later. in 2005. they started making this available on discs instead of paper. As far as I know. 2005 is the latest edition. It comes in 30 volumes and can be subscribed to online but is also available the old-fashioned way.By the way. heres the publishers blurb:"One of the distinguishing features of this set is its intelligent structure. With more than 18.000 bibliographical notes. 50.000 entries and 280.000 references the 4-volume Index is the master key to this work. The 23-volume Corpus. with more than 6.000 in-depth articles on various subjects covering nearly every field. can be considered a summary of all knowledge. New to this edition. is the volume on Countries. which covers the recent histories of countries with detailed chronologies since 1990. updated and precise maps. and essential political and economical statistical data. So structured. the Encyclopaelig;dia Universalis is a powerful research tool. characterised by ease of use and the capacity to provide answers to the most diverse questions.Product Highlights: * 30 Volumes: * 4 Volume Index with 50.000 entries * 23 Main Body Volumes with more than 6.000 indepth articles * 1 Current Events Volume * More than 4.000 world-renowned authors * 32.000 illustrations * 50 million wordsProduct Information: * 30 Volumes * 29.000 Pages * ISBN 285-2296-50-4"
