Description

Images of America: Cleveland Area Disasters looks back at the historic disasters to strike Cleveland in the first half of the 20th century. It documents the tornados; fires; cave-ins; accidents; and explosions that befell the region during that period. Most Clevelanders have heard stories of the Collinwood school fire; the Lorain tornado; the Cleveland Clinic fire; and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey fire; however; over the decades; the true events and the tall tales that followed have become blurred. Some disasters; such as the West 117th Street explosion and the Waterworks Tunnel cave-ins; seem almost completely forgotten. Although tragic; the disasters in this book affected the lives of Clevelanders and often generated changes for the good; which prevented these sorts of tragedies from occurring again. Sadly; in some instances; they did not.

And as such it is very exciting. It makes me wonder how much it is overlapping with original; since I do not know him and I have never discussed it with him. But I would suggest this book to anyone; who would like to get know him. This study proceeds to examine Eastwood`s movies and a number of central motifs assert themselves thrughout Eastwoods work as like: justice; mercy and the angel of death; confession; eternal war versus the dawn of peace; the gathering; particularly the meal; reconciliation. By detailed analyses of film after film; she demonstrates Eastwoods longstanding concern for the state of the American soul. She uncovers his passion for justice and kindness to the oppressed and persecuted; his concern for the transfiguration of violence into reconciliation and peace; and his incessant search for the inestimable human dignity of all persons. His films are filled with a lyrical ache for the justice of cosmic closure and there is always the human dimension and a meditation on human nature; history and ethics. This book will push us back to the films for another look.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. FascinatingBy ClaireInspirational3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Vision of Clint EastwoodBy Sheep23I just picked this book up this weekend at the library and am already excited after reading most of it. The author; Sarah Vaux looks at the films of Clint Eastwood from a religious and moral perspective; yet she does without drawing a one to one connection between event and religious meaning. In other words; she does a great job at drawing out the moral significance of the work of Eastwood without forcing the movie into some religious set framework. While not being terribly familiar with Eastwoods older movies; the movie that most impacted me in the most recent past was Gran Torino. Vaux posits the seemingly hollow shell of a life Walt Kowalski has in the movie as he sits on his front porch drinking beer; failing to reach out to his neighbors. There is an absence of life at his wifes funeral and a stinging pain in connection with his kids (171). It is not really until he engages with his Hmong neighbors that life begins to open to him; that new beginnings are on the horizon. With healing in mind as Eastwoods vision; the Hmong immigrants and Thao and his sister next door end up bringing the healing that old Walt needs; even to the point of him protecting them against the gangs. The ideas of a broken down life and a need for healing; for restoration and redemption cast their eyes forward in this book; especially on the chapters regarding Gran Torino and Invictus. Vaux makes the point that reconciliation is at the heart of Invictus; not only bringing a people together but seeking to tear down existing broken structures (193-194). In the middle of the story of Mandela and apartheid is rugby; a games that has the ability to provide healing for a country that has witnesses and partook of great evil.We get a sense of the cruelty and senselessness of war in many of the chapters of this book; focusing in on Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Even in her analysis of Gran Torino; Vaux goes back to the dangerous place of those coming back from war who are entering into society. Not only looking at disorders such PTSD but also engaging the visions of Doc Bradley going to war and killing others; Vaux bears witness to the destructive forces of war upon the human conscience. This book was a treasure trove of truth about the force of Clint Eastwoods movies. When you read through this book; you will be able to see the connections between human nature and faith; brokenness and healing; despair and hope all wrapped up in each chapter. I hope this book gets a wide reading and is used in such a way to bring the message of religion and film to a greater audience.
