Winslow Homer was American painter; illustrator and etcher; one of the two most admired American late 19th-century artists and is considered to be the greatest pictorial poet of outdoor life in the United States and its greatest watercolorist. Nominally a landscape painter; in a sense carrying on Hudson River school attitudes; Homer was an artist of power and individuality whose images are metaphors for the relationship of Man and Nature. A careful observer of visual reality; he was at the same time alive to the purely physical properties of pigment and colour; of line and form; and of the patterns they create. His work is characterized by bold; fluid brushwork; strong draughtsmanship and composition; and particularly by a lack of sentimentality. Although Homer excelled above all as a watercolorist; his oils and watercolours alike are characterized by directness; realism; objectivity; and splendid colour. His powerful and dramatic interpretations of the sea in watercolour have never been surpassed and hold a unique place in American art. They are in leading museums throughout the United States.

Fresh Translation and Running Commentary of The Gospel of JudasBy Matthew GrotheerGathercole offers a fresh new translation of the well know Gospel of Judas. This book is a very good introduction to some issues surrounding this popular gospel. One of the most helpful items Gathercole includes is a new translation into English as well as a running commentary on Judas. He helpfully portrays the clearly Gnostic ideas at work in its composition (and contrasts it with the canonical gospels). This book helps bring balance to the numerous conspiracy theories out there in certain scholarly circles about the nature of the canonical gospels (as well as the non-canonical ones) and their canonization. I seriously doubt that the discovery of this "gospel" (or any other new ones for that matter) is any real "threat to 2000 years of Christian teaching." I recommend this book for any interested in the area of study dealing with the apocryphal gospels and their significance for further gospel studies.0 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Get some Mystic teaching educationBy judaswasjamesWhen will Christians take the time and trouble to learn Mystic teaching? Page 169: "We have already seen as much [suffering and death of Christ is the solution to sin] in the teaching of Jesus about his death in Mark 10:45; "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many." This is not Jesus saying he will DIE for anyone! He will give his "Psuchen" or Life force; or Soul; his "life breath" -- from the Greek. He didnt say he will DIE to do it! The Gospel of Judas is the antidote to the fiction of the canonical Betrayal myth. It is perhaps showing the actual beginning of it; with "you will sacrifice THE MAN who bears me" -- which is JUDAS; not Jesus! He sacrifices HIMSELF to become one with his Master -- "You will be replaced by someone; *in order that* the Twelve may again come to completion in their God". (36;1-3) Judas is the new Master; succeeding his Master; Jesus; taking his fellow disciples with him back to God. Matthias is NOT mentioned. This character; Judas is also a stand-in for James the Just: "I had a vision of the disciples stoning me and persecuting me severely" (44;25) Only James the Just is historically recorded (Clement Rec. 1:70) as having been stoned BY FELLOW DISCIPLES in this place and period. Judas is the stand-in for the successor; JAMES; like Dr. Eisenman found in his work on the Scrolls; and like I found in the canonical Betrayal; as well as First and Second Apocalypses of James (James in C. Tchacos).WHY is it a farmer from Hawaii has to straighten out the orthodox scholars?
