Los Gatos (Images of Modern America)

[ebooks] Los Gatos (Images of Modern America) by Peggy Conaway Bergtold in Arts-Photography

Description

When John O. Heath first settled in the area now known as Heath in 1848; wild turkey and deer were as plentiful as the areas timber and rich; black soil. The fertile land and convenient location along the east fork of the Trinity River prompted several settlers to follow the Heath familys lead; and Heath experienced steady growth in the early 1900s; with several businesses and schools in operation. Life was hard in those days; with food and money hard to come by; but locals found sanctuary in social gatherings; endless games of 42; mink hunting in the winter; and baseball. Heaths economy was given a big lift when the lake adjacent to the community; known as Lake Ray Hubbard; was filled in 1969 after a seemingly endless rain. With the attraction of the lake and developments that stemmed from it; such as the Rush Creek Yacht Club; Heath now faces the challenge of maintaining steady growth while continuing to stick to its roots as a charming; tight-knit community with an open countryside atmosphere.

I attended the old red schoolhouse on the Ohio River. That was back in the early 1960s. I have many roots from Lewis County; on both of my dads sides. I was searching for his moms dad...James Noel Johnson who died in 1903...when out of the blue I found his Dads dad...Wiley Arthur; a civil war veteran that dad lived with as a child...what a wow moment...great grandfathers picture (which I had only seen one time) was lost in a house fire many years ago...I never thought Id see it again...and there it was...it was almost a spirtual moment...the images of Lewis County found on these pages are priceless to anyone from that region...so very nostalgic and profound. How could anyone that relates to Lewis County Kentucky not appreciate the effort that was put into this wonderful pictorial history of by-gone days? Its wonderful.Rick Arthur; Portsmouth City School Teacher0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lewis county kyBy VPerfect!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lewis CountyBy Joseph HollandI have been conducting research on my familys genealogy and came across this book. Considering I have family from this area I thought it would be an interesting read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a history buff or inspiring genealogist.
