Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers has set the standard for fine woodworking and meticulously hand-crafted furniture for more than forty years. In this modern age of inexpensive mass production; Moser furniture stands out because every piece is hand-made by a master craftsman (or woman). Generally minimalist in style; the pieces are highly sophisticated in their construction. And though Moser has been influenced by Shaker and Japanese furniture makers; the elegant and graceful lines give each piece an aesthetic all its own.In Legacy in Wood; Thomas Moser reflects on his long career and offers his thoughts on creativity; inspiration; and his design aesthetic. It gives an intimate look into the life and work of a pioneering craftsman; whose example shows that you can build a career working with your hands the old-fashioned way.Thos. Moser remains an iconic Maine company and holds to its traditional Yankee origins. The shop remains a family-run and oriented company. All of Moserrsquo;s sons have worked in the shop; and all but one are still there as master craftsmen and designers. The other employees have been with the company an average of 20 yearsmdash;a clear reflection of the value Moser puts on his workers and the respect and love for their work they give in return. Yet the timeless appeal of the furniture has given Moser nationwide recognition and allowed the company to open galleries and show rooms in Boston; Greenwich; New York; Philadelphia; and San Francisco.

GREAT INTRO TO MACROPHOTOGRAPHYBy Lynn StoneDennis Quinn is a self-described ecologist and conservation biologist. but the recent publication of his book Macrophotography makes it clear that he should add outdoor photographer and writer to his resume.Macrophotography is not an exhaustive treatise on the subject. but. more important. it is an inspirational work; if you werent interested in the macro world. or. more specifically. macro nature photography before you opened the front cover. you will be by the time you reach the end cover. Pick a photo (any photo) in the book and you have at your fingertips a description (Tech Specs) of how the photo was made. The species descriptions and the anecdotes that accompany them are a bonus. Most of Quinns photos were taken outdoors. "on location." and he stresses the joy of taking the ordinary critter - such as a beetle - and making it. through patience and macro photography. extraordinary. But macrophotography. as Quinn recognizes. is not always about planting oneself in a swamp or on a carpet of leaves in the great outdoors. Quinn also takes his readers indoors. where subjects can be manipulated and posed far more easily than in the outdoors.Indoor macrophotography requires different techniques than outdoor macro work. and Quinn is up to the task. His photos illuminate both the straight-forward. relatively simple processes that accompany outdoor macrophotography (some might question whether contorting oneself into a pretzel to see eye-to-eye with a frog is "simple") and the more sophisticated art of indoor macro work. For the beginner especially. the book is a trove of information. both about its title and its animal subjects. but there is plenty of photo food here. too. for experienced nature photographers. Consider the cover photo: a treefrog photographed from its underside against a black background. If the reader is baffled by the "how" of the situation. Quinn unravels that mystery and techniques for photographing critters in.aquaria.The era of digital photography has made macrophotography not only easier but potentially far better. The marketplace is rife with macro lenses and accessories. If you havent indulged in the joy of macrophotography. Quinns book may be just the push into that world that youve been waiting for.
