A True Yohe If Ever There Was One!By AVForget the Christian singing Yohes that clog the CD bins of today - May Yohe did the family name proud with her madcap ways. Her fiery. indomitable spirit is what being a Yohe is all about. Facing adversity with a sense of humor and refusing to give in. changing chameleon-like from one incarnation to the next. plucky with courage and sometimes just a little bit too much confidence. May Yohe finally gets her due as one of the first true feminists - a woman who did as she pleased and felt she had every right to pursue her dreams. While most historians look to lady gangsters for inspiration. I say we look to May. who was not afraid to buck convention or to speak her mind during a time where women were publically mocked for such things. May took her licks in the press to be sure. but she endured. and kept tongue firmly planted in cheek through rich and through poor. Her amazing story - full of anecdotes that are sure to entertain you not only about May but about other historical figures as well (for example the Duke of Newcastle and his rather interesting dysfunctional family which included an opium addict and a transvestite) - is one fans of the Gilded Age shouldnt miss. and that pretty much anyone will find interesting. Having received fame on the vaudville stage. she attracted the attention of several well-to-do men with whom she was married. One husband was the owner of the Hope diamond. She lived in luxury and high style. Over the years she lost the good life and actually ended up mopping floors. This is a fasinating read about an outgoing. fasinating woman. Yet. this is a thoroughly researched. well documented historical non-fiction. The erudite authors clear style makes it a pleasure to read. Bravo!
