He starts simple diatonic exercises in chapter one; and moves on to pentatonic and arpeggio studies in chapters two and three. The last arpeggio patterns are cool sounding diminished and augmented arpeggios. In chapters four and five Barry introduces whole-tone and diminished patterns. There is a wealth of great ideas here. The closest book I can think of to this book is Slonimskis Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns. In Slonimskis book you need to really dig to find usable patterns and then figure out how to apply them to changes yourself. In the Serious Jazz Practice Book everything is laid out for you; it is very clear about how to apply the patterns to improvisation. There is also a CD included with the book that illustrates how some of the patterns sound over chord changes. The thing about the patterns in this book is that they all sound great; without being cliche.I think that this book will be a great addition to my personal practice routine and I would highly recommend it to any musician wishing to develop a modern Jazz vocabulary.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good book for intermediate lead playerBy darren tormeyAn excellent book with a lot of ideas; I love of sequences That would keep most people busy for a long time. If you already know a lot of scales arpeggios and sequences maybe this isnt for you. The other Book part 2 Is a little more advanced and may be more practical too. The CD does not give you examples of most of the stuff in the book ; a bit more detail on the CD would have been nice.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. yes yes yesBy PHI have purchased both of Barrys books and they are tremendous encyclopedias of knowledge concerning the realm of any style of improvisation. The art of soloing (as taught here) is the highest art to be achieved in the realm of music. It involves composition in real time; pianists Mozart; Beethoven; Liszt; Rachmaninoff and Chopin composed many tracks based on piano improvisation. This book really took me places and made me understand the validity of basic notes. The most haunting lessons are those demonstrating that just the four chord tones of each change tell the story and are the key to building succulent; easy; interesting solos.Barry inveighs to us that the beauty is not just within the billions of scales that daunt many newbies in jazz. This and the other book are ideal for any instrument; even the didgeridoo and bag pipes. If you practice properly; youll dearly appreciate this.
