In 1867; when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published the first American edition of The Inferno; Dante was almost unknown in this country. The New England poet and educator; who taught Italian literature at Harvard; introduced Dantes literary genius to the New World with this vibrant blank verse translation of the first and most popular book of the three-part Divine Comedy. Expressed in haunting poetry of great emotional power; The Inferno chronicles Dantes passage through nine circles of the underworld and his encounters with tormented sinners. Combining Aristotelian philosophy; mythology; Roman Catholicism; and thirteenth-century Italian politics; this landmark of world literature forms a unique synthesis of the Christian; classical; and secular worlds.Dantes depictions of hell and its grotesque punishments found their ideal match in the hands of the eminent nineteenth-century illustrator Gustave Doreacute;. Unable to find a sponsor; the artist published his stunning engravings for The Inferno at his own expense. An instant and enduring success; Doreacute;s images made a lasting impression on the public imagination. This volumes enchanting translation and unforgettable illustrations offer readers a perfect blend of literary and artistic skill.

Perfect for creating your own copies of the originalsBy Doug McCartneyThis book is referenced regularly by others. and I could see why easily when I received my copy. The BW photos provide enough detail that you can scale proportions when necessary and deduce construction techniques that were used. The scaled sections and plan views of the pieces provide the overall dimensions and critical dimensions that you need to get the feeling of the piece correct. Im building an oxbow chest from it in a college class. and engaged in an argument with my instructor re dimensions of the bracket feet required which werent fully dimensioned. I did turn out to be correct too. thanks to the quality of the information in this book that was provided - I correctly deduced the missing data. Im looking forward to building more of the pieces. These books are old. and the binding on my copy was dried and cracked so all of the pages are loose now. take it easy with your copy. The printing itself is in perfect condition.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very good referenceBy Happy TenThis book had information on more pieces than I expected. The styles vary from high-style European pieces to some country American pieces. Id look at some of the other excellent reviews posted here for additional information on the book.I see that the cover art has changed. I cant tell for certain. but it may mean that theyve released another printing. While the binding of my very old copy is still in great shape. Its good to know that there may be brand new copies available.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy wood chippieGreat book
