2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. somewhat like Latours actor-network theory but easier and more fun to ...By Sarah FinnThis is a fabulous book; makes complex ideas clear and understandable. It provides a welcome alternative to the artist and/as the work model that still has a stranglehold on discussions of art. Looks at the "matrix" of agencies involved; somewhat like Latours actor-network theory but easier and more fun to read; with a great historical dimension missing from sociology which focuses on the now; without tackling the important problematic of time; how to understand the artwork as an event between past and future. The discussion of the indexical sign is key to their historical argument; a critique of Christianitys lingering hold on the supposedly secular present. The message that art is essential to building a democratic society is inspiring.
