Maya Deren: Incomplete Control (Film and Culture Series)

[ePub] Maya Deren: Incomplete Control (Film and Culture Series) by Sarah Keller at Arts-Photography

Description

This book is a compilation of interviews and essays that cover a broad range of photographers and photographic disciplines. Each photographer profiled made a living by concentrating on a specific aspect of the craft; but in doing so transcended their livelihood to become recognized for more than the type of images they created. Each had a distinct "style;" creative approach; dedication to the craft; point of view about themselves and the world. These interviews were conducted during a seminal period in the shift from film to digital and from print reproduction to global distribution on the Internet. Just like their photographs continue to inspire today; now these prosrsquo; words can live on as an invaluable reference for the photographers of the future. The truth and wisdom in this collection transcend time and technology.

LAVALLEYIve wanted this book for sometime; and downloaded it today that was a mistake.while the text is interesing and informative; and at the end of the day I guess well worth the price of admission; most artists will be interested in a book of this sort as a source of study material; and for that purpose the Kindle edition does not work. The "Look Inside" screens on the web page provide better study material than the Kindle bookStill the thumbs are very interesting an I ordered a hard copy of the book right away.So thats My Review; I bought this Book Twice Today! Now thats a statement I know I will very seldom make. :) Really wonderful examples of Technique; and really interesting step by step explorations of the Drawings/Paintings presented; but you loose to much in the transition to kindle for this book; Its going to be a while before I purchase another Art Book on Kindle. (Which is a shame because the first thing I do with most art books is Digitize thems myself.Update: Just got the hard copy today; it is Sooooo much better than the Kindle; and so much better than I expected; the step by step studies are great; the pencil studies very well reproduced without loosing the subtleties of the graphite drawing; and all the studies have lots of delicious detail that only really shows up in a larger format; if you love the study of the female face and form; your going to get many hours of enjoyment working with the images and suggestions of this book.Blessings; BB.8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Didnt realize how valuable this book would be...By KendystixI have a number of reference books on my shelf - not just art books; but all kinds - and I find myself pulling this one down more frequently than most. I was surprised; since its such a niche title; but theres lots of good material for artists who are intermediate and beyond; who are either wanting a reference book for drawing and painting the female form (fantasy or not); or wanting to apply their trusty skills to new concepts.First; this book is not stingy when it comes to showcasing a pretty wide range of work to look at for ideas and inspiration. Second; the author; the talented Tom Fleming; gives readers an open look at his tools and process; something that I didnt even realize I missed in other books. (As artists; sometimes we think we already know all there is to know about tools and techniques; this is almost never true.) Although I paged right past it at first; Ive come to especially appreciate the watercolor how-to sections; including the part where he lays out all his brushes and talks about his opinions of and uses for each. Ive always hated and feared watercolors myself; but Toms guidance on tools and techniques inspired me to take a trip to the art store and look at the materials with new eyes. (Plus I came home with a new brush; new paper and 3 new colors that made all the difference.)In addition; he includes a handful of step-by-step lessons; which (even if you never plan to re-create his projects) provide a valuable road map for figure painting; especially for watercolor-phobes like me. Fantasy females are a great subject; and this is a great staple; but even more than the subject matter; this book is a good; fast-track route to applying practical drawing and painting skills; as opposed to being yet another tome of esoteric advice.Anyway; thats my two cents. Its also an entertaining read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Cosmo TopperVery good book. Informative. Recommend!
