Menswear Dog Presents the New Classics: Fresh Looks for the Modern Man

[ebooks] Menswear Dog Presents the New Classics: Fresh Looks for the Modern Man by David Fung; Yena Kim at Arts-Photography

Description

Prometheus Bound is the starkest and strangest of the classic Greek tragedies; a play in which god and man are presented as radically; irreconcilably at odds. It begins with the shock of hammer blows as the Titan Prometheus is shackled to a rock in the Caucasus. This is his punishment for giving the gift of fire to humankind and for thwarting Zeusrsquo;s decision to exterminate the human race. Prometheusrsquo;s pain is unceasing; but he refuses to recant his commitment to humanity; to whom he has also brought the knowledge of writing; mathematics; medicine; and architecture. He hints that he knows how Zeus will be brought low in the future; but when Hermes demands that Prometheus divulge his secret; he refuses and is sent spinning into the abyss by a divine thunderbolt. To whom does humanity look for guidance: to the supreme deity or to the rebel Titan? What law controls the cosmos? Prometheus Bound; one of the great poetic achievements of the ancient world; appears here in a splendid new translation by Joel Agee that does full justice to the harsh and keening music of the original Greek.

A Decent Read; or a Great Wishlist!By SamI bought this book expecting it to be a bit more in-depth on some artists; but it seems to be more like a list of artists and the albums they produced. It makes for a great wishlist; because there are plenty of excellent bands and albums listed; including some hard-to-find stuff like Agape and Concrete Rubber Band. If you want to expand your musical library; this is a great resource on the early stuff; as well as some of the 80s and 90s. Because it was published in 2000; it wont have anything on more recent bands; which is a minor inconvenience. But; as I said; it makes for a pretty good wishlist for those early albums and introduces several bands that Id never heard of. And since Im always looking to expand my music collection; I found this to be a pretty good book.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Off the Beaten PathBy PaulIf youre trying to find detail on your favorite Christian pop stars; this really isnt the place. You will; however; find great information on those tenacious Christian music "artists". These artists; for the most part; came on-scene before contemporary Christian music was well accepted. They had; out of necessity; to develop their own ministry and distribution systems. They kept their stuff a bit too controversial for the mainstream --both mainstreams. They were too Christian for the secular market; but too edgy for mainstream Christians. The artists Raised By Wolves concentrate on really show some of the better work in Christian music. I made lots of great discoveries in the book. This all is not to say other artists arent mentioned. Newsboys; Audio Adrenaline; DC Talk; and more; get very positive reviews; too. I bought the book because Im questing for Christian music.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Encyclopedia look at Christian musicBy D. BenzThis book is an excellent source of dates and names. However; it is lacking personal glimpses into the lives of the artists. We find out the songs and albums produced by a number of Christian artists (and those preferring not be identified as a Christian artist) but the book is almost completely devoid of personal interviews with the artists or profiles of their life experiences and influences. The book is useful as an encyclopedia of the history of Christian rock and roll but begs a follow-up book profiling more in depth some of the artists such as Terry Taylor; Steve Taylor; Larry Norman; and Phil Keaggy. Also; a minor note here but the author also drops the name of his band (The Wayside) more often than the bands success to date would warrant.
