I donrsquo;t usually care much for history books. Usually the writers try to be objective and dispassionate as they rattle off facts and dates; often resulting in something that is rather boring.Then someone mentioned Mr. Rullirsquo;s book about the Haymarket Affair. I picked up a copy; looked at the table of contents and saw chapter titles like ldquo;Ayn Rand Could Kick Karl Marxrsquo;s Assrdquo; and ldquo;The Working Class Smellshellip;So Do Roses.rdquo; I immediately knew I was holding something special in my hands.Reading it was fascinating and a revelation. The Haymarket incident was a bit of history that I really had little understanding of. Rulli goes into details and lists facts and dates; but tries to keep it all in context; often comparing the mood of the time to the unrest of recent years and even today. For accuracy; his research involved actual newspaper articles and trial transcripts.One of the things I enjoyed most was when he would give virtual tours of the neighborhoods involved; giving clear directions to buildings and landmarks; both existing and long gone. More than once; while reading of a structure that used to be ldquo;on the corner ofhellip;rdquo; or at such and such address; I was struck by the fact that not only had I seen many of these sites; but some I pass almost daily.Although he is somewhat sympathetic with the labor side of the struggle; Rulli makes a point to show respect to the policemen who died and provides stories and photos of heroes and victims on both sides.I highly recommend this book. It is informative and fun to read. I personally plan to carry my copy with me while I take my own walking Haymarket Tour to see the sites and relive this critical part of Chicago history.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great reading for not only the history buff but also those touring Chicago. Maps of the Haymarket Square area allow the reader to walk the scene and imagine the events.
