Monroe County (Images of America)

[DOC] Monroe County (Images of America) by Terri L. Kuczynski in Arts-Photography

Description

The oldest town in Denton County; Pilot Point is situated atop the highest point in North Texas at a place that was once a landmark for wagon train pilots traveling through the region. In 1854; the town was platted and lots were sold; many to cross-country pioneers who were drawn to the abundance of fresh water; game; and fertile soil. The city began to grow more quickly after incorporation in 1867; and when the railroad arrived in 1880; Pilot Point became one of the busiest trading centers in North Texas; boasting both the largest cotton gin and university. From the early days of cowboys and cotton in the 1800s; to oil and cattle in the 1930s; to the changes that came with the 1960s; this new volume tells the unique story of Pilot Point.

Superb Pictorial History of Monroe County in the Arkansas DeltaBy studentGreat reasonably priced pictorial historical review of great interest to local residents. Quality of production is excellent. Monroe County. AR is typical of most rural counties in that the population is decreased from prior levels and many once thriving communities have disappeared without a trace. Present day residents of such rural counties often have little knowledge of their local history; they will be surprised to learn what is now an isolated road intersection once had multiple homes and stores. a post office. cotton gins. sawmills and a railroad station. A totally different way of rural life now disappeared is brought back to the reader via lovingly restored pictures selected from present day residents. This Images of America series of books has been around a long time with photographic histories of urban areas; it is very commendable that it has been extended to rural America. Look for a their book on your county or city. You will not be disappointed.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
