Required Reading for all musiciansBy NumismataI was lucky enough to live at the TubaRanch with Mr. Phillips and his family during the time this book was being compiled. No one has ever done as much for their instrument as Mr. Phillips did for the tuba. Recordings ranging in every style imaginable. new music commissions in the hundreds. Tuba Christmas. Octubafest. Tuba Santas. ITEA. ITEC. are just a few things that would not exist without Mr. Phillips. This book also offers insight into the music scene of New York in the 50s 60s. performing in the circus bands. and the early days of the brass quintet movement. as well as his own solo and teaching career.If I had one complaint. I wish the book was in more volumes as I can recall several stories that did not make the cut. Would also love to have a more complete listing of all Mr. Phillips recordings (of which there are many for which he was not credited on the album cover) so I can finish chasing them down.Do not pass this book up. it is required reading for any aspiring musician looking to make their way into music as a career!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was so interesting to read about all of Mr. Phillips adventures with the circus. freelancing . . . The stories about performing with others in New York alone are worth the cost of the book. If you are interested in the history of the tuba. history of tuba literature. history of composers who wrote for tuba (because of Harvey). history of Conn. history of TubaChristmas. history of TUBA (now ITEA). ... the list goes on and on.
