Some Stunning Photography!!By Bob GlickSmithThe cover photo and the title were quite compelling; and the layout was visually stunning. On the strength of that I purchased the book. I was a tad bit disappointed. The images in the book continued to be quite stunning and an excellent array of photographic talent; but the text is sometimes baffling and sometimes too over-reaching to drive or explain a simple point. I kept the book and I continue to use it as a cross reference for a digital photography class that I teach. I dont recommend it for the layman; and only then if you enjoy looking at some very good photographic images. It can boast of an excellent glossary . . . 20110822_bgs..1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice and sort of "Academic"By TJI think such book is majorly designed for academic studies in general or any sort of "studies". It is a nice book to have on the shelf (and can be kept as a reference too).Despite the fact that I do photography (hobbyist) and lot of things mentioned in this book do not really bring my attention when I work behind the camera; yet; it is good to know how your camera works (and even how other models other than yours work). Who knows; the knowledge in this book might even make up your mind to decide for your next camera purchase. The contents are fluctuating between camera-technical explanations and processing procedures (i.e. using software on images). All in all; I believe whatever level you are in photography; this book can be of great value.Of all the chapters in this book; chapter 12 specifically was of interest to me for introducing new concepts to me. It has a chapter about HDRI but it is basic and plain sort of. Would be good for you if you never experienced doing some HDR. For full extent about HDR you might want to think about getting Christian Blochs HDRI handbook (also from Rocky Nook). The context is well written (though I did hope for few diagrams here and there) but generally it is written in form of articles. Each article can take up to 2 pages maximum; and most of them are in one page content. The text goes from history of photography; to technical terms of antique cameras and so on up to reaching to the digital era. There is even a chapter that forms a comparison between film and digital photography. If you think film photography is dead; you might want to re-consider that point! Anyway; the book is generally about digital photography. All in all. Its a must.Note: not an aesthetic book. Mainly technical but NOT about how to work with the camera; but mainly explaining how cameras work and differences among them; with some software touch.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent ResourceBy LEMThis book should be on every photographers shelf. Concise and easy to read; it clearly explains the basic concepts every photographer should know (and then some). I also love the way the authors bring in some of the more artistic and philosophical foundations and not just focus on technical details. From the intro; "... the most important underlying construct of photography is its ability to make permanent the vision of the photographer...". Love this book; ... highly recommended. Well done Rand; Broughton; and Fielder.
