Live Souls presents 210 of the numerous photos that Alec Wainman took in the midst of the Spanish Civil War; and his personal story of his time as a volunteer member of the British Medical Unit. Until the present only a small number of his photos have appeared in a few historical books; where they have been valued for their insight into the troubled period. After much research by Serge Alternecirc;s; the entire corpus of the photos was discovered mdash; in excellent condition. In Live Souls; Alternecirc;s has selected the best of these photos and imparted valuable detail with his introduction; captions to the photos; a timeline; as well as an overview of the international implications of Spainrsquo;s civil war from a contemporary perspective. Alecrsquo;s photographs and story bring revolutionary history to life; offering a complement to what George Orwell described in Homage to Catalonia and what the volunteer medical teams achieved with Drs. Norman Bethune and Reginald Saxton. Alecrsquo;s humanitarian ideal as an apolitical Quaker persuaded him to volunteer in August 1936 at the outbreak of the war to defend the ideals of liberty. His lens reflects his compassion for the citizens; volunteers and the civil war itself. The story and photographs keep the souls of the Spanish citizens and volunteers alive.

Five StarsBy Vicky KallunkiExcellent Book1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the usual boring notation book. comes alive with motion and illustrationsBy Lets Compare Options PreptorialI write lyrics and collaborate with composers on the music side. Although Ive read every theory book known to man. from the dummies series all the way to tough theoretical texts. this book is far and away the clearest exposition of theory in a step-by-step format that Ive found. The illustrations are plentiful. fun and wonderfully expand on the text. The author starts with traditional "Common Practice" and without spending too much time on history. dives right into how rhythm. harmony and melody create emotion.More importantly. and different from most other theory books. this little gem goes beyond dry descriptions of notation. and breathes life into the PROCESS of music. just as a novel analysis would show the MOVEMENT from protagonist goal to obstacles to triumph or failure or both. The theory is there. but it is brought to life with familiar tunes (rather than Bach complexities that cant possibly be deciphered by a songwriter like me). showing the progression of emotions from expectation to surprise and resolution. tying the notation and composer decisions into the "story" objective of the composition.I cant opine for professional musicians. but as a professional writer this book resonated with me far more than any other. and was surprising in the depth and breath of detail. going way beyond "the dot adds a count" type stuff you expect in beginner books. Highly recommended. paid full price after it was recommended by a composer I work with. and has helped me understand his decisions.
