Worth ReadingBy Stephen M. ShearonDisclosure: Im a friend of David Pruett. acknowledged as such in the book.I read this book recently while on vacation. over several days. My primary take-away? This is an enjoyable. informative. relatively easy read. The book. in my opinion. will appeal to four different audiences: 1) fans of MuzikMafia artists such as Gretchen Wilson. Big Rich. James Otto. etc.; 2) artists hoping to "make it" in Nashville or via the Nashville music industry; 3) industry insiders who want to know more about this phenomenon that shook up the Nashville industry and generated lots of revenue; and 4) country music scholars. For the fans of MuzikMafia and its individual artists. the book tells the very interesting story of the MuzikMafias birth among industry outsiders. their collective and individual rise (or not) to success. the substantial difficulties the community has encountered over the years. the circumstances surrounding the various products (including CDs) members of the group produced. and the state of things ca. 2009. If you are really into things MuzikMafia. it would be fun. I think. to read this book while also listening. in chronological order. to all the CDs issued by MuzikMafia artists and perhaps watching their videos on YouTube. The book basically provides the back-story to much of this artistic output.Artists hoping to find success via the Nashville music industry will find the MuzikMafias rise instructive. David explains how "outsiders" became "insiders." They didnt fight the system; they worked it - and. FWIW. helped revive the fortunes of the industry. for a time.Industry insiders will want to read this because it will help them understand what happened to their industry between 2004 and 2009 and will acquaint them with the current Mafia scene and some of the upcoming artists within it. At the very least. the book will give plenty of fodder to radio and television hosts seeking to entertain their audiences. For scholars. the book will complement Davids dissertation. Although I havent read the dissertation ("MuzikMafia: Community. Identity. and Change from the Nashville Scene to the Popular Mainstream." The Florida State University. 2007). Im fairly certain it contains more ethnomusicological theory and analysis. basically absent from the book. The book. however. includes updates (in particular. Chapter 7) that bring the story closer to the present.Finally. back to a more personal note: As a resident of the Nashville area and a music lover. I appreciated Chapter 1. "The Nashville Scene." In it. David explains the geographical distribution of the music industry and music activities within the Nashville city limits. Although I suspect this information exists elsewhere. Im not aware of it. and so am glad to have that information here.Now. go watch the video of "Save A Horse. Ride A Cowboy" on YouTube. Theres most of the Freak Parade right there. in all its glory. Makes you smile!2 of 7 people found the following review helpful. ONE SIDED VIEWBy CountrygalTHIS BOOK READS LIKE A ONE SIDED VIEW OF WHAT THE MUZIK MAFIA REALLY WAS AND WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.
