Gregg Allman Gives the Reader a Look Behind tbe Curtain ...By George CzechI have been an Allman Brothers fan since the first time I heard "Live at the Fillmore East" in 1972. I was in the Navy and heading from Missouri to my new base at Quonset Point. Rhode Island ... and mind you this was an 8-track tape I had bought just before leaving on my trip there ... but I was totally hooked on their sound from then on. I no longer have that 8-track ... but I have most everything the Brothers have done. A natural listening offshoot was Gregory Allman ... and again. I have all his solo works. But listening is only half the story ... and while any number of Rolling Stone ... or even the occasional People magazine ... try to give insight ... this book really enlightened me. The journey Allman took me on felt as though he was sitting across the room ... his words connected. and they brought him to life in a very entertaining way. His life has seen incredible highs. and oh so devastating lows ... but it is obvious. the music ... and "the brotherhood" helped him to survive. It is at times a confessional ... other times a painful reminder. that the "rock n roll lifestyle" is a seductive mistress. that will steal your soul ... your dreams ... and even your very life if you let it. Gregory Allmans book is a must read for all Allman Brother fans ... or anyone who wants a real look behind the curtain. I highly recommend "My Cross to Bear" ... you will have a whole new appreciation for one of rock musics true artist.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read this book in two days because it is hard to put down.By LroweGregg Allman tells the good. the bad the seriously ugly in his book. Some of the events and situations they steered into made me cringe. but I do not want to judge. These young. talented and driven guys were far from perfect. they allowed the sudden money and fame to take over the lessons were hard earned. I love the figurative language that just flows from Gregg. and you can hear the Tennessee in him for sure. You can also hear the sadness and grief he dealt with all of his adult life. Rest in peace and thank you so much for the music.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book!By dog loverThis book was great! I love the Allman Bros. I grew up listening to them. I especially love where Gregg said that he was beat up by a little girl who sat behind him in elementary school(she jumped him from behind) and all he saw while he was getting pounded was Mary-Jane shoes fists. I just pictured that in my mind! So funny!! Some difficult times too-but made out alright. Duane would have been so proud. God bless you rest in peace Gregg. You will be in my prayers!
