The title of this book;mdash;or; more accurately; of its subject;mdash;for no author was ever less likely than I have lately become; to hope for perennial pleasure to his readers from what has cost himself the most pains;mdash;will be; perhaps; recognised by some as the last clause of the line chosen from Keats by the good folks of Manchester; to be written in letters of gold on the cornice; or Holy rood; of the great Exhibition which inaugurated the career of so many;mdash;since organized; by both foreign governments and our own; to encourage the production of works of art; which the producing nations; so far from intending to be their "joy for ever;" only hope to sell as soon as possible. Yet the motto was chosen with uncomprehended felicity: for there never was; nor can be; any essential beauty possessed by a work of art; which is not based on the conception of its honoured permanence; and local influence; as a part of appointed and precious furniture; either in the cathedral; the house; or the joyful thoroughfare; of nations which enter their gates with thanksgiving; and their courts with praise.

DavisThere is a lot of great information in this book that can prove useful for quite a few folks. Of course. the book steers wildly off course in some spots. particularly where the author rambles nonsensically about Communism. his distaste for non-representational art. and Jesus. and this may annoy some readers. I didnt particularly care about that because some of the information contained is practical and straightforward. I can skip the parts where the author sounds like he has a few coins short of a piggy bank and glean the good stuff regardless. and so can you.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Finally some straight talk and clear direction.By George RocheThis is not the first book I have bought on the subject of art as a career. I have read several. I have also attended several seminars. and talks at expose. museums. career days at art school and art societies that I belong to. I had in fact ldquo;given uprdquo;. When people would ask my about selling my art I would respond. ldquo; No. Irsquo;m not into that. Itrsquo;s for sales at shows I enter but hardly anyone ever sells anything at the shows. Irsquo;m just painting for my own enjoyment.rdquo;Well no more. I am inspired to do what this book says and not do what it says not to. I have a clear vision forward. And a plan to proceed by. Reading this book you are instructed quite specifically what to do and how to do it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Book!By G.J.
