CarpenterThis is a beautiful book. one that all collectors of Lovecraftian art must own. It is a triumph for Sammie Maine and Flame Tree Publishing. The text by Ms. Maine is quite readable. She discusses the origins of HPLs creation. its appearance in his stories and its probable antecedents. She reviews other texts in the Eldritch Library. as well as authors who have written their own version of the book. such as Simon and George Hay. We are treated to brief snippets about other authors who have drawn inspiration from HPL to spice up their own fiction. We learn about artists like Geiger and how HPL has inspired modern artists and filmmakers. The Necronomicon appears in TV shows. comics and video games. This is all well and good. interesting in its own right. but not the reason you want this book.The book has 128 pages and it is simply bursting with gorgeous digital art. Every page has a marvelous illustration or photograph. almost all in full color. More than 25 artists are featured. I cannot possible choose a favorite. but the Cthulhu by Bryan Reagan is particularly good.The illustration by Gabriel on p115 is simply magnificent. This is so unfair; I do a disservice to all the other artists by not mentioning their names specifically.A Lovecraft Retrospective by Centipede Press is selling for about $600 second hand. For a bargain price here. you can get a very generous amount of new Lovecraftian art to revel in. Urgently recommended.
