While dance has always been as demanding as contact sports; intuitive boundaries distinguish the two forms of performance for men. Dance is often regarded as a feminine activity; and men who dance are frequently stereotyped as suspect; gay; or somehow unnatural. But what really happens when men dance? When Men Dance offers a progressive vision that boldly articulates double-standards in gender construction within dance and brings hidden histories to light in a globalized debate. A first of its kind; this trenchant look at the stereotypes and realities of male dancing brings together contributions from leading and rising scholars of dance from around the world to explore what happens when men dance. The dancing male body emerges in its many contexts; from the ballet; modern; and popular dance worlds to stages in Georgian and Victorian England; Weimar Germany; India and the Middle East. The men who dance and those who analyze them tell stories that will be both familiar and surprising for insiders and outsiders alike.

I have read a lot of music biographies and I rate this as one of the best (and as bonus. it is on occasion. laugh-out-loud funny). For anyone who likes The Cure. just buy it. I am a similar age to the founding members of the band and found myself relating so much to what socially. and whom. musically influenced them. Listen. this is a great story. Five stars. unequivocally.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ive been looking so long at these pictures of you that I almost believe that theyre realBy L. AlfaroAs a fan of the cure for 30 years. I really enjoyed getting to know the story behind their music. I especially liked the pictures from the early days of the band. My only complaint is that the book is very heavy on British colloquialisms -- "punch-up." "piss-up." "punters." etc. -- which made it difficult to understand in many places.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Close to CleverBy James MowatA very thorough and well researched account of an almost unlikely pop band. The Cure were distinct and contrary and this book rollicks along with their rise to the top of rock n roll doing both the dumb things and knocking out great songs. The author gets it right in tone and detail. aside from some lengthy and irrelevant town planning history of the Cures hometown. Overall a great and deserving account that had me loading up Spotify with many a long lost tune.
