A fine biography of the greatest of all Lieder composersBy George GoldbergA short but judicious and up-to-date biography of one of the greatest composers; certainly the greatest composer of the German art songs known as Lieder. Gibbs is not too prim to discuss the many salacious stories about Schubert but carefully sifts the evidence and produces what seems a fair portrayal. I for one donrsquo;t care a fig about Schubertrsquo;s sexual orientation ndash; Die Schouml;ne Muuml;llerin could be Der Schouml;ne Muuml;ller and it wouldnrsquo;t change the beauty of the music a bit ndash; but since it became possible to discuss such things in print; a lot of ink has been spilled by those who attack Schubert for his supposed homosexuality and those who love him for it. In truth; we havenrsquo;t a clue which way Schubert swung or even if he swung at all (except he didnrsquo;t contract syphilis from his piano). Gibbs keeps the focus on the music; which after all is why we pay any attention at all to an impecunious Austrian who died nearly two centuries ago. Gibbsrsquo;s discussions are interesting and helpful; though he defers to the famous opinion that every bar of music in a book about music; like every equation in a book about math; loses 10% of potential readers ndash; there is no notation in this book. Highly recommended as background reading; preferably read while a Schubert quartet is on your music player.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Clear and InsighfulBy Brooklyn musicianBeautifully written; well-argued and insightful. As a musician; Gibbs discussion of Schuberts wide and expressive mood swings reveals the critical quality necessary to interpret his compositions. Highly recommended.11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. First-rate introduction to Schuberts life and careerBy John ShroyerThis book was the first biography of Franz Schubert that I have read. I dont think I could have picked a better introduction to Schuberts life and career. Although the book is only 200 pages in length; it completely and accurately reports the facts of Schuberts life and career and the various influences on him during his life. It also corrects a number of myths and inaccuracies regarding Schuberts life that I found to be of great interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Schubert and his circle of friends and supporters.
