For over three decades; contemporary Native American artist Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds has pursued a disciplined practice in multiple media; having shown his paintings; drawings; prints; and text-based conceptual art throughout numerous national and international galleries and public spaces. In the first book-length study of this important artist; Bill Anthes analyzes Heap of Birdss art and politics in relation to the international contemporary art scene; Native American history; and settler colonialism. Foregrounding how Heap of Birds roots his practice in Cheyenne spirituality and an indigenous way of seeing and being in the world; Anthes describes how Heap of Birds likens his art to "sharp rocks"mdash;weapons delivering trenchant critiques of the loss of land; life; and autonomy endured by Native Americans. Whether appearing as interventions in public spaces or in a gallery; Heap of Birdss carefully honed artworks pose questions about time; modernity; identity; power; and the meaning and value of contemporary art in a global culture.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but Im glad I didBy MissPrissI am not sure what made me buy this book. but Im glad I did! I could not put it down! Janice spills the beans in only the way she can. about her life... the good. the bad. and the ugly. Yes. she talks about Warren Beatty. Jack Nicholson. and Liam Neeson. just to name a few. But this story is so much more than juicy gossip. she talks about some dark realizations about her life growing up and how that has spilled into her adult life. Even if you arent a fan. you will be by the end of this book. I loved it so much. I just downloaded her second book!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What A Life!!By BK - Walled Lake. MIWhether it be soul-searching or jet-setting around the world sometimes at a moments noticehellip; answering the call of a friend or chasing the cover of a magazine. Janice is like a hurricane blowing in and then leaves a path of jaw-dropping destruction behind her!!!Such an agonizing journey. slowly fighting to break free from the horrifying "talons" of a sad. abusive childhood. She may have been blessed with an amazing face and body - but the depth of her love for her children is something no camera lens can ever capture...God Bless you. Funny and Outrageous As the Woman Herself!By Catherine p LaVioletteJanice Dickinson is outrageous and so it makes sense her book is written in a no holds barred manner. Its highly entertaining--just like the woman herself--and also gives glimpses of vulnerability. a quality one senses lies just behind the tough girl exterior she cultivates. Of course. she dishes on the rich and famous and powerful. As a supermodel she rubbed elbows with many of them. Reading her words about others. however. I never felt she had an axe to grind and was being mean-spirited. Shes tougher on herself than she is on anyone else in her life/book. I went back and forth "should I; shouldnt I" before purchasing "No Lifeguard on Duty." I didnt know much about Janice beyond watching her on Tyra Banks model discovery show and faint memories of a paternity battle with Sylvester Stallone when she said her son was also his and he balked. I didnt want to read about a narcissists "perfect. Im so much better than you" life nor did I want to read about a "train wreck" life of drugs. alcohol. bad men and outrageous behavior. This book was a pleasant surprise b/c it was neither. Candid. yes. Funny. absolutely. Interesting. no doubt. I actually found myself applauding Janices strength and courage revealing she does indeed have a soft side and. yes. the self-doubts we all suffer from now and then. I highly recommend the book b/c. bottom line. its a captivating read; one I didnt want to put down.
