A quiet colonial town forever changed by the shot heard round the world on April 19; 1775; Lexington evolved from its famous roots and adapted to the ever-changing culture of the nation it helped create. Over the centuries; an influx of immigrants and new ideas helped shape the town from farming community to booming rail suburb and into todays diverse city that treasures its rich heritage while striving toward a dynamic future.

I grew up in Logan on 13th St behind the Garrett Estate and was witness to the destruction of what was known as the "Garden Spot of Logan" sadly it was not highlighted in the book. The estate is historically significant for many reasons. It was the summer home of Elizabeth and Henry Drinker who called it "Clearfield". The property is described in her diary (The Diary of Elizabeth Drinker by Elaine Forman Crane). She is the foremost diarist of Colonial Life in Philadelphia. The property was later owned by Alfred Cope who named the property "Fairfield". Alfred Cope and his brother Henry Cope (Awbury Arboretum) ran a shipping line between Philadelphia and Liverpool. His son Edward Drinker Cope was born here and was one our nations earliest paleontologists. His exploits were documented in the PBS American Experience episode "Bone Wars". His sister Elizabeth Cope Garrett donated part of the estate for the Logan Library which still stands and is now 100 year old. The library does appear in the book. Also. missing is "Woodfield" the country estate of Clayton French one of the founders of the Philadelphia Company - Smith. Kline and French. Up until 1967 "Woodfield" still stood as a Catholic grade school and high school named "St. Marys Academy".1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
