Description

The concept behind fractal geometry is extremely difficult to explain . . . but easy to see and enjoy. Eric Hammel; a professional author of military history books; is unable to explain fractals in a way that will be clear to anyone else; but most mathematicians canrsquo;t explain fractals in language most people can understand. The simplest explanation is that fractals are graphic representations of high-order mathematical formulas that repeat patterns to infinity.Donrsquo;t get hung up on the math. Itrsquo;s really all in the seeing. Like Volumes 1 and 2 of Eric Hammelrsquo;s Fractal Dimensions; Volume 3 is filled with one hundred examples representing many types of fractals. The differences between and among fractal artists using the same array of fractal-generating software is the same as the differences between and among all portrait artists or between and among all landscape artists using oil paint; chalk; watercolors; charcoal; even fingers. It all comes down to the unique mindrsquo;s eye the artist brings to the game and what he does to improve or transform the art once the fractal-generating software has been sufficiently exploited. For all that; all a lay person really needs to appreciate fractals in their infinite varieties is a collection of fractal art to peruse; to get lost in for awhile; and their own preferences for art. No two fractal artists will see or exploit the same fractal formula the same way. What we offer here is simply what one fractal artist has been able to see; and what he alone decided he wants to share.

Beautiful layout / projectsBy KristannaI bought this book out of curiosity; I am not a Twilight fan at all; I prefer Bram Stokers type of vampires; but I love the idea of gothic knitting.I was pleasantly surprised by this book and the different type of projects. True; there are only 2 sweater patterns (none of which are for a grown woman); but there are some beautiful scarves; mittens; socks; and a to-die-for lace shrug. There are quite a few lace projects; and a lot of red and black; which gives the overall style a sense of gothic Victorian. The photographs are absolutely mouthwatering; and the writing is cute and fun (even for non-Twilight fans); and I want to make most of the projects in this book. (But as another reviewer said; always check for errata before starting ANY project in ANY knitting book.)Highly recommended as an interesting book to add to your pattern collection; IF vampire inspired / gothic knitting is your style.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A must have for any knitter; vampire fan or not!By SpewKnitterI originally bought this book because my best friend made me read all the Twilight books. And I liked them. Not quite as crazy in love with them as she; but they were a great read on the train and I liked the knitted items I found in the movies when she dragged me to the theatre. Now I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. So naturally I had the Harry Potter Knitting book on pre order for nearly three months before it was released! BTW; also a great must have for knitters! So when I stumbled across this book; I thought; Hmm...... well; if I get one or two patterns I like it would be worth it; and I could knit up something for my Twilight Crazy friend!Well not only are the patterns great; but they are highly flexible. If you changed the color scheme just a bit; it wouldnt be vampire inspired; so great for gifts for your non-vampire inspired friends. And some of the patterns are just so awesome! I cant wait to finish the Shapeshifter Shrug; which due to its button placement you can wear different ways. Theres a pattern for fingerless mitts with a wolf paw pattern on the palm; and I already have three friends lined up demanding a pair! And if you liked Bellas gray mittens in the movie and tried to buy them (EIGHTY BUCKS and DISCONTINUED by the store that carried them) have no fear; the pattern is in here to knit up your own.So even if you dont like vampires; twilight; or werewolves; I still encourage you to add this book to your knitting arsenal. The patterns are flexible; fun; and quite trendy!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Designs are practical!By SarahRI bought this book for the Lore Hoodie pattern alone; but it turns out there are more than just a couple patterns in here I could see making. I am about finished with the Lore Hoodie now; which is turning out nicely because the instructions were very clear and easy to follow even for a beginner like me. Each pattern is labeled for different difficulties and there are several in each so this book could be for just about everyone. Also; one doesnt have to like vampires to appreciate this book. There are of course a few items that have quirky vampire quote words on them;(a handbag and pillow pattern) but those could easily be changed. There is nothing too childish or too teen-like about most the items and a lot of them are actually pretty elegant looking. What I found most important; is this book is completely practical. If your at all interested; I would definately recommend this book.
