The following "disclaimer" appears at various points of the Kindle edition of the book:"Images in this book are not displayed owing to permissive issues."(This Review applies to the digital (Kindle) edition of this book; as of August 2011.)Indeed; no diagrams; drawings or other images; often referred to in the text; almost all which would be necessary for a proper comprehension of the subject; are included in the digital edition. This is a highly disturbing matter for the readers of the digital books. I wish the publisher will take the steps to make amends; as soon as possible; the least of which would be updating the file by including the missing images; and sending an update to those who have already bought the "image-missing edition"; at no additional cost.In any case; this is a practice which should be strongly discouraged by the growing population of eBook readers. is advised to remind publishers to make such differences emphatically clear in their Book Descriptions; and if at all possible; avoid altogether discriminating against the eBook audience by producing such unnecessary discrepancies between the digital versus the printed copies of the same work.As for the text; its well-informed and lively; with a penchant to explain a complex issue such as intonation in a most plain and comprehensible language. The subject is further brought to life by the authors subtle sense of humor. Its an enjoyable read; for anyone interested in the subject; even as one could reasonably take issues with some of the positions taken by the author against the widely adopted Equal-Temperament; or his quick dismissal of another authors position on this (Stuart Isacoff) early in the book. Overall; its a nice addition to the ongoing debates on intonation; good enough to help me ignore the missing images and give it a 4 star for the content. (Meanwhile; Ive considered to order a paperback copy of the book; as well.)copy; 2011; Payman Akhlaghi; August 26th; 2011; Los Angeles1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read for musicians for expanding their musical knowledge of tuning methodsBy ZeusinAZA very interesting travel through the ins and out of temperament through history. A thoughtful critique of equal temperament tuning (which everyone today is familiar. As a pipe organ enthusiast; Im interested in the various tuning methods organ builders utilized. Roland/Rodgers has built digital keyboards (I have a Roland C230 and a C200) that allows keyboardist to try many of the unequal tunings discussed in the text. Unfortunately; Roland discontinued the Classical line; in favor of non-portable organ/digital consoles. The reader must possess a quality working vocabulary for musical terminology to understand many of the finer points of the author discusses.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ET is not what you think it is!By Georges MelkiRoss W. Duffin has written here a very informative book about a subject very few music lovers-and even musicians- know enough about. For instance; I have heard many a music lover expressing with conviction the opinion that Bach composed his "Well Tempered Clavier" to promote equal temperament(ET)! This is; of course; far from the truth; and Duffin goes through the subject of "temperament" with a wealth of historical and technical detail. The reader is lead through the development of the various ldquo;temperamentsrdquo; used by musicians from the Renaissance; through the Baroque period; into the Classical and Romantic periods and up to 1917; the date at which; according to the author; ET was finally accepted all over the world. In addition to that; there are many biographical notes about prominent musicians and scientists who were involved in the development of this subject; and quite a few humorous sketches serving to illustrate one point or another. So if you are a serious music lover; with some technical background-i.e if you have learned to play the piano; or some other instrument;- and you have always been told that C-sharp and D-flat are one and the same note; or that a chromatic semitone is the same as a diatonic semitone; you must read this book; and discover for yourself why this is not so. You will also understand what musicians mean when they talk about the "character" of a particular key; because in ET; all keys are exactly similar; apart from absolute pitch. This is why; among other reasons; I agree with Duffin when he says that ET has "ruined harmony". Of course; professional musicians might not agree with him; but they will also benefit from this book; because it contains all they need to know about the subject; in a condensed volume; and with many bibliographical references to support the views it is expounding.
