The main advantage of the study is that Carrier puts Krauss lengthy career into focus; and shows that despite her variety of theoretical methods; there is a consistent set of themes that unify her oeuvre; Further; Carrier writes in away that presents his subject clearly to an audience that would be either unfamiliar with Krauss; or find some of her writing opaque or obscure (this applies to analytic philosophers; but also to a few art historians- ha!)However; the studys main strength is also its main weakness. Although it is admirable that Carrier provides a clear overview in little over 100 pages; he doesnt really get to grips with the complexity of Rosalind Krausss writing. Carrier himself thinks little of Lacan; Bataille and so on; which is fair enough; but Krauss relies on these writers; and any attempt to grapple with her must take them on. Its not really enough to dismiss them with a one-liner. At times; Carriers brevity can border on glibness. Carrier writes from a standpoint outside of Krauss theoretical methods; and outside of the political academic debates she is involved in. While this gives Carrier the advantage of distance; it also prevents him from getting into the finer grain of her writings. This brings us on to another problem.It is surprising that no-one has yet written a fuller account of Krauss; and the reasons for this are suggested in the preface. Krauss is not quoted extensively for copyright reasons; and it is suggested that some editors did not want to publish the manuscript because of the power Krauss and her allies wield. So we still need a more thorough study of Krauss writing; but I guess it may not appear while Krauss is still alive. A Short Book with Enormous ContentBy John Adkins RichardsonThis very brief book gives one a clear understanding of major critical positions in art from the 1950s to the present while arguing that Rosalind Krauss is "our greatest philosophical art critic." Prof. Carrier is tolerant and understanding of every school of thought and gives all their due. If you are a person who is familiar with the major movements in modern art and keeps abreast of such magazines as "Artforum;" the book is your cup of tea. It is not; however; for the beginner; this is criticism of criticism at its intellectual best.Carrier surveys a wide range of opinions by major figures and does so with great economy and directness. His commentary is a demonstration of the way in which an open minded scholar can assess and discriminate among contesting views with candor but without prejudice.
