The reviews by several French reviewers confirmed some of my suspicions. namely that the translation was probably done by a computer ... and rather badly. even to my American ear. When the computer got "stuck". it simply left the English word in place. This occurs frequently. Also. on occasion. the translation is simply wrong. usually by making a literal translation of an idiomatic expression. A good translation would have a more elegant and flowing quality. I agree that the translation cant have been reviewed by anyone who both understood English well. and also spoke good French.All that being said. I still find it useful to read a French translation of a book in English which I both love and know well. I KNOW what to expect next.
