Four StarsBy Robert Solingerits very good.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. an excellent and extremely well-researched overview of the lsquo;outsider artrsquo; phenomenaBy Fred ScrutonThis book presents an excellent and extremely well-researched overview of the lsquo;outsider artrsquo; phenomena. It is very well illustrated. and contains a wide range of American and international artists. along with several in-depth case studies. Wojcikrsquo;s background is in folklore and religious studies. and he clearly admires and embraces the work of the artists presented. but he brings a clear-eyed. dare I say. ldquo;outsidersrdquo; perspective to what is implied by the art worldrsquo;s use of the lsquo;outsider artistrsquo; category. Beginning with a thorough explanation of the differences and evolving histories (up to the present) between various labels such as rdquo;outsiderrdquo; ldquo;art brutrdquo; ldquo;visionaryrdquo; ldquo;folkrdquo; and what they are meant to suggest. he debunks much of the romanticism. idealization. compartmentalization. and marketing strategies that typically surround lsquo;outsiderrsquo; artist labels. He goes on to present the work of selected artists in the context of their own individual socio-cultural traditions: the unique creativity of the individual artists is not diminished. but Wojcik rejects the mythology of their work coming more lsquo;purely from within.rsquo; and convincingly shows influences that may simply be largely unfamiliar to mainstream audiences. The lsquo;outsiderrsquo; artists are understood in the context of broader vernacular traditions. not so much as isolated outliers in the visual arts. Wojcik doesnrsquo;t attempt to fit the artists into theories or categories. he resists the secularization of religious-based artwork. and lets the artists personal stories. life circumstances. and belief systems speak through their work. The book closes on a note of affirmation: that while lsquo;outsiderrsquo; art makingmdash; as purely and traditionally definedmdash; is essentially impossible in modern culture. since lsquo;outsidersrsquo; have (actually) all along engaged with their times and cultural surroundings. there is still plenty of room for the emergence of unique. typically self-taught visions. This is an informative. broad-reaching. and ground-breaking contribution to the field of lsquo;outsiderrsquo; art. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the book is easy to read and should be accessible to anyone with ...By M. AllenThis book is a major accomplishment in scholarship about Outsider/Folk/Self-Taught Art. The author has carefully researched his material and provides a compelling argument for his point of view. Although written by a scholar. the book is easy to read and should be accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject. The numerous color photographs are beautiful and enhance the authors text. No doubt it will provide guidance to future generations of scholars in this field.
