As dogs inhabited Dickensrsquo;s city; so too did they populate his fiction; journalism; and letters. In the first book-length work of criticism on Dickensrsquo;s relationship to canines; Beryl Gray shows that dogs; real and invented; were intrinsic to Dickensrsquo;s vision and experience of London and to his representations of its life. Gray draws on an array of reminiscences by Dickensrsquo;s friends; family; and fellow writers; and also situates her book within the context of nineteenth-century attitudes towards dogs as revealed in the periodical press; newspapers; and institutional archives. Integral to her study is her analysis of Dickensrsquo;s texts in relationship to their illustrations by George Cruikshank and Hablot Knight Browne and to portraiture by late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century artists like Thomas Gainsborough and Edwin Landseer. The Dog in the Dickensian Imagination will not only enlighten readers and critics of Dickens and those interested in his life but will serve as an important resource for scholars interested in the Victorian city; the treatment of animals in literature and art; and attitudes towards animals in nineteenth-century Britain.

It is a decent book; and it was a decent book when it was published as the Singer Sewing Manual for Tailoring.I needed it for my workrooms; so I dont care too much that it is a total duplicate; but was like um...They didnt actually update ANY of the pics; what they did was color shift them so that the rich greys; fuchsias; and teals of the late 80s early 90s are now instagrama-fied. No problem; but you can get that Singer book for about 1cent; and a couple of bucks shipping; so do that instead.Here are the ISBN numbers I am comparing:This: 978-1-58923-609-7 or 1-58923-609-2That: 0-86573-241-8 or 0-86573-242-6So just be aware; decent book for almost all home sewers who want to get into tailoring and havent had experience.Just same/same with the two.I included a picture to show what I mean. They didnt change anything really. I imagine that if I had followed the pattern instructions the final product would not have been as nice. This book walks you through every step- from interfacing selection to buttonholes (bound and machine); collar tailoring (notched and shawl; with custom; machine; and fusible methods) to lining insertion (by hand or machine). There are tons of different techniques presented; all illustrated with photographs and descriptive captions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering making a tailored jacket for the first time or someone who wants to learn tailoring techniques beyond typical pattern instructions.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
