With this provocative and infinitely moving collection of essays; a preeminent critic of our time responds to the profound questions posed by the visual world. For when John Berger writes about Cubism; he writes not only of Braque; Leacute;ger; Picasso; and Gris; but of that incredible moment early in this century when the world converged around a marvelouis sense of promise. When he looks at the Modigiliani; he sees a mans infinite love revealed in the elongated lines of the painted figure. Ranging from the Renaissance to the conflagration of Hiroshima; from the Bosphorus to Manhattan; from the woodcarvers of a French village to Goya; Duuml;rer; and Van Gogh; and from private experiences of love and of loss to the major political upheavals of our time; The Sense of Sight encourages us to see with the same breadth; courage; and moral engagement that its author does.

One of the best pastel instructions by Maggie PriceBy A.BennettWhen you are an artist. you tend to collect a lot of books on the " how tos " and many of them end up on the bookshelf and not being used. This one is a total exception! She has some wonderful techniques for painting sunlight and shadows and she is easy to follow. She goes step by step and has some great demonstrations. I use this book all the time because I tend to forget stuff. so I grab her book and can easily look it up. Well worth the price!!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Too many words. not enough take-awayBy Cora BrownThis book is mainly demos of 6-8 photos of a painting at various stages. and long text descriptions of the order that colors are applied. If this is how you want to learn. you might enjoy the book. I found very few ideas or techniques to remember. The most helpful demo for me was a close-up scene of two blond children on a beach. I might refer to it for portrait painting help.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful artists referenceBy Liz WindsorThe late Maggie Price was known for her vibrant landscapes. It is no longer possible to take a class or workshop with her. so this book is a wonderful substitute. full of thoughtful information and gorgeous demonstrations. Im delighted to have this generous book for my reference library. Highly recommend it for anyone wishing to build or improve their skills in pastel or other media.
