I was. however. disappointed in the gray. dullness of many of the paintings. I think this is due to the fact that he starts many of them with grayed paper and washes. I usually take 5 or 6 pages of notes to remember salient points. With this book I took 1/2 page as he kept repeating the same things over and over in a different way. Proving his point with examples of paintings. It is an excellent book for watercolorists as he demos some step-by-step paintings. And as I said his technical skill is par none.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Too much repetition. not enough information on palette and techniqueBy Robert A. HicksI chose this book because I love his use of palette and brush work. also the English landscape subject matter. I was very disappointed after reading the book how little David divulges of his actual palette and start to finish technique. He repeats the same mantra over and over with very little new insight after the first couple of chapters. It is a beautiful book but not what I expected. I purchased his book "Painting with Impact" at the same time and felt the same about it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. David Curtis is a better artist than teacherBy Johannes Van MourikDavid Curtis is compelled. like so many other competent painters. to put out a tutorial for beginners in an effort to stay relevant. He is actually a very good watercolorist. I think good artists like him should just do a compilation of their best work and forget about the obligatory teaching angle that is supposed to justify the book. Many of the British plein air painters are excellent watercolorists as well as oil painters. something not done here in the US. I am somewhat of a collector of fellow artists work and think that the book should have been designed for that market.
