Palermo; City of Kings: The Heart of Sicily

[DOC] Palermo; City of Kings: The Heart of Sicily by Jeremy Dummett in Arts-Photography

Description

This book analyzes forms of architectures within the frame concept of geo-architecture; and looks into the interaction of architecture and its environment. It starts by discussing the collisions between architecture and geography; humanity; as well as other architectures and reflects on the ancient Chinese notion of emotional relief and expression through natural landscape. It then studies important transportation and scenic routes; like pavilions; towers; clan halls and villages within architectural systems. It also discusses the forms of geographic integration and isolation expressed through architecture; which reflects their historical and cultural context. This book is the first of a 4-volume book series. The series develops the innovative concept of ldquo;geo-architecturerdquo; by exploring the myriad influences of natural; human and historical factors upon architecture. These influences are considered in three categories; namely; interaction between architecture and nature; interaction between architecture and its human users and change in architecture over time--each category serves as a lens. Augmenting these lenses is the Time-Person-Place concept applied different geographic. The analysis ultimately focuses on two aspects: geographic influence on architecture and architectural response to geography. The over 1000 pictures of case architectures enriches the study with stunning and unique visual angles.

The information is scholarly but reads easily and is hard to put downBy KarenIn both this book and Dummetts book about Syracuse. there is much to learn. The information is scholarly but reads easily and is hard to put down. If a novelist tried to write this story. it would be too fantastic to have credibility. Such is the story of Sicily. A fascinating read. Dummett peels back the layers to give an understanding of how Sicily has arrived where it is today. Any visit to Sicily requires constant changing of historical hats - from Greek to Arab to Norman to Spanish. it is all there and Dummetts book helps you get it straight in your mind both for posterity and for your visit.5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Palermo deserves much. much better.By F. B. JefferyHaving visited Sicily several times and familiar with its (and Italys) history. I purchased the authors book on Syracuse and then (without having read the first book) this one. I gave Syracuse two stars - its language is trite. its facts suspect and the information of minimal use. I give Palermo (the book) one star. The author copied extensively the historical material from Syracuse. and the information about Palermo (a most intriguing delightful city) not very helpful. For an example of superior writing. I recommend Mary Beard. SPQR. A History of Ancient Rome. Its several descriptions of Sicily before and during the Roman period gave me a much more nuanced understanding of Sicilys early history and its impact on later times. Consider other choices to understand the richness of Sicilys history and people. Salutamu e Bona Pasqua!
