LagoLowell Observatory has one of the richest histories of any astronomical observatory. It was from here; from the brain of Percival Lowell; that a century of science fiction writers (Wells; Burroughs; Bradbury) presented the idea that Mars bore canals and an intelligent civilization. It was here that Pluto was discovered. It was Lowell Observatory that found the evidence Edwin Hubble used to show that the universe is expanding. But there have been few books that do justice to Lowell Observatorys history; so Kevin Schindlers new book is very welcome. He has dug through the Lowell archives to find photos that tell Lowells story; including photos even hardcore astronomy history buffs will find new and surprising. It is also a story full of interesting people and events.
