Perspective in Action: Creative Exercises for Depicting Spatial Representation from the Renaissance to the Digital Age

[ePub] Perspective in Action: Creative Exercises for Depicting Spatial Representation from the Renaissance to the Digital Age by David Chelsea at Arts-Photography

Description

The plants and landscape at Rowan Oak are the ldquo;little postage stamp of soilrdquo; that William Faulkner owned; walked; and tended for over thirty years during the writing of many of his short stories and novels. Faulkner saw and smelled the earth and listened to sounds from the cultivated grounds and the surrounding woods. This is the place that offered him refuge for writing and provided him food from its garden; fruit and nut trees; and pasture for his horses and a milk cow. Rowan Oak boasts a diverse landscape; encompassing an aristocratic eastern redcedarndash;lined drive and walk as well as hardy ornamental shrubs; trees; pastures; and a hardwood forest with virgin timber.More than fifty years after Faulknerrsquo;s death; Rowan Oak remains a sanctuary and a place of mystery and beauty nestled in the midst of Oxford; Mississippi. The photographs in The Land of Rowan Oak are botanist Ed Croomrsquo;s exploration and documentation of the changes in the plants and landscape over more than a decade. Croom encountered early morning mists; the summer heat and haze; and even rare snowfalls in his near-daily walks on the grounds. His photographs record a decaying fence line; trees and plants that have since disappeared; and the newly restored sunken garden. This book honors the land Faulkner loved. While Faulknerrsquo;s novels have left an indelible legacy in southern and American letters; the landscape of his beloved home also serves as a record of the botanical history of this most storied corner of the American literary South.

An Educational and Informative BookBy MDominicDavid Chelsea is an undisputed master of perspective. In his three books on the subject. he has very creatively and effectively used the monologue comic format pioneered by Scott McCloud to develop an invaluable set of tools for the beginning and developing artist. While the latest book seems like something of an afterthought to the preceding volumes. it is nevertheless a very helpful reference and more importantly. a creative challenge to the artist to further their perspective skills and use them in new ways.Chelsea imparts a lot of information in his books. but his easy narrative style makes them as much a pleasure to read as to study. With Perspective in Action. theres a fair dose of art history mixed in with the instruction. giving this volume a relevance and degree of interest beyond its tutorial aspects. Any reader who appreciates art. whether they are themselves an artist or not. will find something valuable and fascinating in here...but it is the artist who will get the full benefit of Chelseas incredible perspective skills. This book. along with its preceding volumes. should have a permanent home in the reference library of any serious artist. I know they have a place of pride in mine.
