Description

This anthologys magnificent illustrations and decorations in the medieval style were created by famed artist Walter Crane in the 1890s to illustrate a sumptuous multivolume limited edition of The Faerie Queene; Edmund Spenserrsquo;s sixteenth-century allegorical epic poem. A tribute to Queen Elizabeth I; the poem celebrates holiness; temperance; chastity; friendship; and other virtues in verse tales of knightly adventure; courtly love; and acts of gallantry. Crane created these 352 magnificent illustrations and decorations in the rich nineteenth-century style of neo-medievalism made famous by William Morris and his Kelmscott Press; with which Crane was associated.Cranes designs have been meticulously reproduced here; including striking images of gallant knights in armor; demure maidens; fearsome dragons; unicorns; angels; and a host of decorative elements mdash; all displayed in a rich variety of full-page plates; finely detailed borders; and exquisite vignettes. Also included are charming headpieces; tailpieces; decorative initials; and the exquisite typography that originally appeared within the borders and other areas.Sure to delight any admirer of Cranes dazzling style; this splendid archive; skillfully arranged by Carol Belanger Grafton; will also provide a wealth of inspiration and immediately usable graphics for artists and illustrators alike.

Brick and mortar to write better RFPs in the Construction industryBy Pascal PERRY// MY VERDICTAll in all; this book constitutes a straightforward blueprint to writing; say; successful RFPs in the construction industry; thanks to its concision and simple--but effective--examples provided.I advise you to complement your reading with "Request for Proposal: A Guide to Effective RFP Development" considered by procurement professionals as the bible for RFP preparation.// WHAT I LIKED1/ Concision of the book--115 pages based on hands-on experience; and flanked by a 49-page RFP sample2/ Discussion about key differences between the negotiated approach--that is; based on RFPs--and the lowest price technically acceptable (LPTA) approach--namely; competitive bids.3/ The construction industry RFP format.4/ Analysis example of submitted competitive proposals; including:a) cost estimate analysis based on the UniFormat construction RFP work breakdown structure (WBS)--i.e.; derived from the A111 form recommended by the American Institute of Architects (AIA);b) general requirements analysis--e.g.; project staff and support; safety/security; engineering; facilities; utilities; equipment; cleanup;c) fee and markup analysis--e.g.; construction costs; contractors proposed financial terms; state and local taxes; andd) final proposal analysis--e.g.; total construction estimate costs; adjusted construction budget; contractors responsibility determination and comparison.5/ Identification of the 16 critical sections (out of the total 25 presented in the book) to be included in the request for proposal for small construction projects.// WHAT I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE1/ Better visual clues to help readers navigate back and forth between chapters--merely providing readers with chapter numbers along with the chapter titles in the footer would have helped.2/ Supporting visuals--real ones; we mean--that would greatly help understand the thinking process. Seems like the editor had no access to professional graphics tools. In that regard; were raving fans of the method called Graphical Representation of Work (GROW) since we discovered it years ago in the book "Proposal Preparation"--which we deem; as a side note; one of the best books on how to properly respond to an RFP solicitation.3/ An RFP response evaluation matrix featuring a weighted average (WA) method to better identify the contractor best matching requirements set forth in the RFP solicitation package.4/ Further details on RFP writing techniques that would hit the nail on important specificities of the construction industry like security concerns; and compliance to construction standards.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
