Phenix City (Images of America)

[DOC] Phenix City (Images of America) by John Lyles at Arts-Photography

Description

Columbia is a planned community that has influenced suburban development since its creation in the mid-1960s. This city of 100;000 grew out of rural farmland; patterned by the best thinkers of its time; including visionary developer James Rouse and a team of consultants such as sociologist Herbert Gans and transportation planner Alan Voorhees. World-famous architect Frank Gehry designed key buildings. Oakland Manor; featuring a barn that is a historical landmark; is one example of the structures preserved to give roots to the new town. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon grew up in Columbia and has said it altered the course of his life; making him into the writer he is today.

Tomblinwhile this is a good book and has some photos I had never seen before. there are some glaring issues. to wit:The photos end in 1956. just after the cleanup in Phenix City. The opportunity to take advantage of the 10s of thousands of photos available through Jim Cannon. a local collector. was not explored or the photos included would have been more wide ranging. The events after the cleanup. including the rapid growth of Phenix City from 2000 forward. the birth of Chattahoochee Valley Community College. the construction of two campuses for Troy University. the new industrial park. the new whitewater rafting resort and associated development. and the new nomenclature. city of churches. that arose as Phenix City arose from the ashes of the mob and turned itself into the buckle of the bible belt are all neglected.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Phenix City in PhotosBy R. WigginsI ordered two copies of this book.one for me. one for my sister. because we were born in Phenix City and love reading stories about our heritage. The book was a little disappointing to me because there was so much more material that could have been added to the book by two men in Phenix City who have thousands of picutres of the history of Phenix City. I just didnt feel like the book was complete. Much more reseach from local historians should have been checked.
