Dezember 1598 wurde einer der einfluszlig;reichsten Kuuml;nstler des kommenden Jahrhunderts in Neapel geboren. Von Zeitgenossen als Michelangelo seines Jahrhunderts betitelt; wurde Gian Lorenzo Berninis Kuuml;nstlerdasein so aufmerksam beobachtet und beschrieben wie kaum ein anderes der Fruuml;hen Neuzeit. Und wie kaum ein anderer Kuuml;nstler sollte Bernini in dessen Verlauf das Stadtbild Roms in solch unvergleichbarer Weise prauml;gen und den Houml;hepunkt der italienischen Barockskulptur setzen. Als Sohn des florentinischen Bildhauers und Malers Pietro Bernini zog er mit seiner Familie im Herbst 1606 in diese fuuml;r ihn zukunftstrauml;chtige Stadt; in welcher Kardinal Camillo Borghese als Paul V. den pauml;pstlichen Stuhl bestiegen hatte und; als Souverauml;ne des Kirchenstaates und Oberhaupt der katholischen Christenheit; die Herrschaft uuml;ber die glauml;nzende Metropole in seinen Hauml;nden hielt. Dieser pauml;pstliche Stuhl; als temporauml;r sozialer Quantensprung; brachte der Familie Borghese den Status eines europauml;ischen Herrscherhauses; welchen es mit kuuml;nstlerischer Pracht zu veredeln hieszlig; und den Papst mit seinem Kardinalnepoten zum wichtigsten Auftraggeber machte. Um die eigene Kultiviertheit unter Beweis zu stellen; auml;nderte sich mit jedem neuen Papst auch das kuuml;nstlerische bdquo;Establishmentldquo; ; welches Berninis Vater zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts in die Dienste des Papstes brachte und Bernini selbst spauml;ter den Aufstieg ermouml;glichte. Zunauml;chst bot ihm dieses Arbeitsverhauml;ltnis die Mouml;glichkeit; seine Begabung vor dem Papst zu demonstrieren und; dank des Zutritts zu den vatikanischen Kunstschauml;tzen; seiner Begeisterung fuuml;r die antiken Statuen und der juuml;ngsten Malerei; wie der Raffaels und Michelangelos; nachzugehen. Von der kunstvollen Vergangenheit Roms und der Antike angeregt bdquo;wauml;chst Gianlorenzo in einem Ambiente auf; das nachhaltige Wirkungen auf ihn und seine Kunstauffassung haben sollte.ldquo; Berninis Aufstieg als Bildhauer beginnt mit dem Auftrag des Kardinalnepoten Scipione Borghese fuuml;r die Restaurierung mehrerer Kleinplastiken und findet seine Fortfuuml;hrung in den bekannten Borghese Skulpturen fuuml;r dessen Sammlung in der neu erbauten Villa auf dem Pincio.

Advice was to photograph at sunrise. and to get forest service maps to pick a place to go in the area. Also to have patience and wait for the best light - which is of course is the most desirable. but I. for one. travel with a non-photographer husband who does not wish to spend much time in one place. As an ex-Montanan. I am familiar with most of these sites. The editor of this book (and others in this series) should really borrow the idea from PhotoTripUSA - give a rating on the locations! That would be the single most helpful feature from a guide book. For any out-of-state visitor (like myself) with limited time (say 1-2 weeks). a most practical decision to make when planning a trip is. which locations to go? its not possible to see all the places at the best time in one trip. so one has to choose. Its hard to judge from the text which ones should be on the top list. The author may be very accomplished professional photographer. however the images selected for the book are less than inspiring - not those that would make me feel the urge to see and photo the place. which again doesnt help one to choose the place to go. But. even with these limitations. it IS first such book on Montana. it will help to some extent to plan a trip there.
