Fun to read; easy to understand and packed with relevant infoBy Andrea PolkI purchased this book to help me understand the basics of portrait photography and to improve how I use my DSLR when taking both candid and portrait shots. Im an intermediate photographer; but just purchased a Nikon D3300 and wanted to use that camera to take my daughters senior pictures with professional results. In addition I recently purchased Photoshop Elements 13 to edit the photos. (Ive used both Adobes Lightroom 4 and Corels photo editing software; but find that for ease of use and performance with both a Mac and Windows 7 PC - PE13 works best for me.)This book is geared towards teaching the beginner to the intermediate photographer. It literally gives you all the building blocks you need in informational bites that are easy to digest. The author offers insights and information in a way that is easy to understand without being condescending or overly simplified.I found the Tips to be useful; in addition to the information underneath each photograph. The section related to photo editing with Photoshop Elements was a pleasant surprise; covering most of the basics. I also really liked all the photographs in this book as with each Assignment (lessons are broken down into Assignments...) photos literally help to illustrate the points outlined in the lesson. Nothing is too complicated and its easy to use the book as a quick reference if needed.Im very pleased with this purchase and I will look into other books in the Photo Workshop series to increase my understanding of photography concepts; with an eye on improving my enjoyment of this hobby and producing better photographs.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Excellent how-to manual on portrait photography.By Jeffery S. HermanI am extremely impressed with the authors approach to this difficult topic. It is written for the intermediate photographer who has basic camera skills and wishes to sharpen his portrait skills. The book takes an excellent approach. The author shows a great photograph; and then she walks you through the process she used to get it. Many books on this subject omit that part. She goes into the nuts and bolts; especially the use of reflectors to enhance natural-light photography. She shows the ideal portrait; then shows a "back away" shot so that you can see how she set it up. She gives the best description of the use of natural light I have ever seen; especially how to use indirect light from windows. She goes into detail about how to use various aperture settings to achieve different effects; depending on the intended message of the photograph. She does a very good job of describing how to create different moods with portrait photographs. Each photo lists the ISO; shutter speed; and aperture settings. The book assumes you have a basic understanding of how to use your camera. It doesnt take you to the "professional" studio level of very elaborate and expensive equipment. For example; she shows how to use a Chinese lantern and a common shoplight to produce a great soft-lighting effect. She also shows how to use common fabrics as a diffuser to produce more pleasing tones and contrast. She was able to achieve lightbox effects with minimal expense; and gives details on how to do it. She even goes into detail on which bulbs from your hardware store will work and which wont; and why. Ive never seen that in another book. The book is definitely for the "pro-sumer;" the proficient non-professional. The tips on using reflective surfaces is worth reading the book for. Ive gotten many great ideas from this book. Very highly recommended.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great introduction to portrait photographyBy CustomerThe breadth of content in this exceeded my expectation although I was already familiar with the "look" of the Wiley Photo workshop books. Starts with the basics of equipment; light; connecting with your subject and then moves into some practical considerations for composition; design elements. Large section gives great tips for capturing family groups; kids; babies and action shots and the book ends with postproduction hints. Exercises to try are at the end of the chapters and there are examples and hints on every page. Even found tips about photographing more elderly subjects which I have found hard to track down elsewhere. This is a visually appealing workbook loaded with practical hints and information for those beginning their portrait photography. After an intial read; I have gained the confidence to approach someone and organise a portrait shoot.
