It eloquently describesmdash;as the subtitle suggestsmdash;the life and times of an important musician within the context of family life; American social history; and world events. Beyond that; the author paints a written portrait of the talent and drive that led to Bloomfield-Zeisler becoming a much-lauded virtuoso at a time when women rarely were recognized in the classical music arena and when anti-Semitism was alarmingly on the rise. The author also effectively reveals the toll all of this took on the pianistrsquo;s life. It is a book that should be read by social scientists; historians; musicians; gender studies scholars; and anyone who would enjoy a wonderfully engaging read. While the scholarship is meticulous; it flows like a novel! I highly recommend this book to everyone.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An exceptional biography of an extraordinary woman a difficult time for a woman to be a successful concert pianistBy CustomerThis is a biography that places Bloomfield-Zeisler where she belongs in the history of American musicians. It is full of details of the times and circumstances; especially in turn-of-the-century (nineteenth-twentieth) Chicago; as well as of the Bloomfield-Zeisler family; with a sympathetic portrait of the complex woman who is the subject of the book. It is also the product of deep and thorough research handled gracefully so as to be exceptionally readable.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
