[DOC] Placemaking: An Urban Design Methodology (Routledge Research in Planning and Urban Design) by Derek Thomas at Arts-Photography

Description

Pierre-Paul Prudhon was a French Romantic painter and draughtsman best known for his allegorical paintings and portraits. "Prudhons true genius lay in allegory; this is his empire and his true domain;" Eugegrave;ne Delacroix later wrote. His artistic style contrasted starkly with the dominant version of Neoclassicism under Jacques-Louis David. Prudhons paintings were based on classical texts and ancient prototypes; but his dreaminess and melancholy were more akin to Romanticism. Prudhon was at times clearly influenced by Neo-classicism; at other times by Romanticism. Appreciated by other artists and writers like Stendhal; Delacroix; Millet and Baudelaire for his chiaroscuro and convincing realism; he is probably most famous for his Crucifixion (1822); which he painted for St. Etiennes Cathedral in Metz. The young Theacute;odore Geacute;ricault had painted copies of work by Prudhon; whose "thunderously tragic pictures" include his masterpiece; Justice and Divine Vengeance Pursuing Crime.
