[ebooks] Plainfield Township (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) by Ann Byle at Arts-Photography

Description

From the colonial period; the Poughkeepsie area has been a prime location on the Hudson; midway between Albany and New York City. Accessibility; scenic beauty; and a dynamic economic and cultural environment have made both city and town of Poughkeepsie excellent communities in which to live; work; and play. Numerous Americans have left their mark here; including the Livingstons; S.F.B. Morse; the Smith Brothers (of cough drop fame); Matthew Vassar; Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt; and Thomas Watson Sr. Poughkeepsie has also been enhanced by the contributions of its African American community and by successive waves of immigrants seeking a better life. From hosting New Yorks United States Constitutional Ratification Convention in 1788 to becoming the location of IBM during World War II; Poughkeepsie has continued to be the site of world-changing events.

This was given as a gift that was enjoyed throughly!By Gayle ComptonThis was given as a gift to someone who had lived in Plainfield Township. and they truly enjoyed learning of the history and hashing over fimiliar sights and family names of residents. I cant wait to get the book so that we can read it.We have been residents for 44 years and know the author and her family. too.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An enriching readBy Andrew L. RogersThe words and images of "Plainfield Township" are like the memories of friends and family shared across the dinner table. Byles ability to craft several small tales into a grander story made this small book an enriching read. As a resident of west Michigan I will never drive through Plainfield Township again without warmly recalling the farmers. restaurant owners. and many others that helped shape it. Recommended for west Michigan residents and those interested in how our everyday stories shape the towns we live in.
