Great entry level courseBy BookloverThis is a wonderful book and DVD for the beginner that knows the notes and chords and a few strum patterns but wants to take that next step. So many instruction manuals cover way too much material with poor explanations. This one is different. What he does is explain basic music theory. He then covers several strum patterns; picking patterns and flat picking techniques. Along the way he show shows; hammer ons; pull offs; runs and other helpful techniques. The beauty of this course is two fold. First; he does not try to take on too much. He definitely takes a big step towards intermediate but doesnt go too far. Everything in this course is valuable and necessary as you go to the next level. Secondly everything is explained and demonstrated in great detail. You are not left to wonder about anything. Once you master what he is showing you can move on to a higher level with him or another instructor. He explains things very well and has a relaxed manner that that most students would like. An intermediate player would be bored with this course but for a beginner looking to start that journey to intermediate you just cant find a better course.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I have come to the conclusion that nothing can really replace a living; real-time teacher. But!! David Hamburger is as close as you can get to sitting next to a knowledgeable "real live" teacher. His video "includes" the student and makes room for the questions and explanations that would normally take place in an actual lesson. This book is the "text" to the lessons. It is the resource for all those questions. If youve got the guts to try to learn on your own; (Or your just too poor or cheap or stubborn to pay for lessons - start here. This book should go along with his other books on learning how to play acoustic guitar. David takes the time to show the chords found in American roots music with good diagrams and fingering. I would recommend this book for anyone trying to learn chords because the chords shown can be used for allkinds of music style.
