Plant-Driven Design: Creating Gardens That Honor Plants; Place; and Spirit

[audiobook] Plant-Driven Design: Creating Gardens That Honor Plants; Place; and Spirit by Scott Ogden; Lauren Springer Ogden in Arts-Photography

Description

The Mighty Fallen is a beautiful; evocative presentation of more than 150 never-before-seen photographs of the nations greatest monuments and war memorials; along with text that describes the memorials and tells their stories. This extraordinary collection calls attention to the power of memory and the ways in which we immortalize people and events. As Larry Bond notes in the Introduction; "Memories of a war or battle are unpleasant; but few veterans would want them erased." This book is a unique tribute to veterans and a commemoration of some of the most significant conflicts in our history. Most battlefields leave little record of the historic confrontations that occurred there. Those who fought in epic struggles want us to remember not just the outcome; but the cost of victory and those who paid the price for the freedoms we enjoy today. Memories fade; so we raise monuments of stone and bronze to carry their message of sacrifice through the centuries. The Iwo Jima Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC are instantly recognizable; but there are monuments all over North America honoring more than 300 years of military service. The Mighty Fallen shows you hundreds of monuments; memorials; and statues conveying the message their designers wanted you to hearmdash;these are more than just a date and location.

True sustainability in our gardens comes from using plant material which is indigenous and doesnt try to overcome local conditions. So much plant material is sold that is inappropriate and most people dont know the difference. They think that if the nursery. garden center. home store. etc. is selling a plant. it must grow here. Armed with knowledge and a plan. you can use this book to create a space that will exceed your expectations. Good plant lists. lovely photographs and excellent advice. I have gardened for over 60 years and have many gardening books in my library. This book is a treasure.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. No color photos in e-book!By NenI read the Kindle sample chapter. and was really looking forward to reading the full book with pictures on my iPad. Unfortunately. I was very surprised to discover that the books photos were black and white in the ebook version- the cover photo is in color. but not the photos inside. either reading from the iPad or iPhone. That said. I think the authors have some interesting ideas and reminders for gardeners to contemplate the specific site characteristics of their garden. I did get the impression that the authors (gardeners) were doing the kind of venting that we all sometimes do when confronted with poor garden designs or plant choices that are ill suited to their site. The black and white photos certainly helped emphasize stronger. more graphic garden and plant combinations. but Ill have to get the paper book to get the full impact of the softer. blowsier drifts of grasses and perennials. If anyone else downloaded this book and had color photos. please chime in.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book s a good read for anyone planning to buy a plant for their yard.By Eileen PhelpsThis book is perfect for people who have acreage. It helps suggest plantings that seem to have happened by themselves and once established would be very low maintenance. It is less helpful for people with McMansions. and large concrete patios. However. anyone planning a landscape should read this book because its a tastemaker. If my family asks me what I would change in their yard. Id say dont keep one each of twelve different kinds of plants. Pick a few of the ones that seem best for the site and multiply them as if theyd reseeded themselves.
