The environment that we construct affects both humans and our natural world in myriad ways. There is a pressing need to create healthy places and to reduce the health threats inherent in places already built. However; there has been little awareness of the adverse effects of what we have constructed-or the positive benefits of well designed built environments. This book provides a far-reaching follow-up to the pathbreaking Urban Sprawl and Public Health; published in 2004. That book sparked a range of inquiries into the connections between constructed environments; particularly cities and suburbs; and the health of residents; especially humans. Since then; numerous studies have extended and refined the books research and reporting. Making Healthy Places offers a fresh and comprehensive look at this vital subject today. There is no other book with the depth; breadth; vision; and accessibility that this book offers. In addition to being of particular interest to undergraduate and graduate students in public health and urban planning; it will be essential reading for public health officials; planners; architects; landscape architects; environmentalists; and all those who care about the design of their communities. Like a well-trained doctor; Making Healthy Places presents a diagnosis of--and offers treatment for--problems related to the built environment. Drawing on the latest scientific evidence; with contributions from experts in a range of fields; it imparts a wealth of practical information; with an emphasis on demonstrated and promising solutions to commonly occurring problems.

Reading this makes me feel better about my job (and provided hours of laughs)By TinaI was a fan of Toms Top Ten articles and read this book because of that. Living on Long Island my entire life and having worked as a waitress here many years ago. I can honestly say I think Ive met at least a few of the "wonderful" individuals written about. Some people are seriously messed up. The great thing about this book is that Tom is laughing at them with you and shining a light on all the crazies. Great book. Hope theres a part 2 in the future.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A laugh a minute!By Eagle3You cant imagine how much fun this book is to read! It doesnt matter which order you read it in - front to back or back to front. The chapters are extremely short and each one is independent of the others. It was great to get such a good insight into what it takes to own and manage a restaurant. Recommended to all people who enjoy eating in fine restaurants or who have ever thought of opening a restaurant of their own.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hope you dont recognize yourself in Toms stories!By CustomerThis is a fun book especially for those of us who like to eat out and enjoy good food and nice restaurants. Some of the stories of difficult customers are almost too bizarre to believe! Of course living and dining on Long Island adds to the enjoyment of a book that made me laugh out loud many times.
