Countless New Yorkers; as well as visitors from all parts of the world; have experienced an oasis just a few feet off Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. Since the 1860s; Central Park has been the home of three different zoos: the menagerie; the zoo of 1934; and what is today known as the Central Park Zoo. The Central Park Zoo begins with the menagerie of the 1860s; an impromptu public zoo begun when citizens and circuses started donating animals to the city. It continues in 1934; when Robert Moses-perhaps the most influential man in the citys planning history-built a newer zoo; remembered to this day for its lions; tigers; elephants; and gorillas. It ends with the brand new zoo and exhibits built in 1988 under the supervision of the Wildlife Conservation Society. With stunning; rarely seen images; The Central Park Zoo not only is a treat for the eyes but also comes alive with the barking of sea lions; the soft fur of snow monkeys; the sweet smell of peanut butter; and the taste of "ice cakes"-treats for the zoo residents; of course.

This Book Has Interesting Historical Information About Port Townsend.By WilliamWhen Loompanics Unlimited was in business. its headquarters was in Port Townsend. Here is some of the interesting information that this book mentions: Port Townsend was the first permanent settlement on the Olympic Peninsula. It was founded on April 24. 1851 by Alfred Plummer. Port Townsend was designated as a US Customs Post in 1854. Port Townsend went bust after the anticipated railroad failed to arrive. In the mid-1890rsquo;s. the townrsquo;s population fell from 7.000 to 2.000. The 1897 Discovery of Gold in the Klondike brought some temporary wealth back to Port Townsend. There is a picture of the Fire Bell Tower which is part of the cityrsquo;s skyline. There is a picture of the Port Townsend High School Team that won the state championship in 1911-1912. There are pictures in the book of Fort Worden and the Point Wilson Lighthouse. The removal of the Customs House to Seattle in 1913 was a terrible blow to Port Townsendrsquo;s economy. When the army pulled out of Fort Worden in 1953. approximately half of the townrsquo;s jobs went with it. Port Townsend was left a remote mill town. There is an aerial view picture of Port Townsend in this book that was taken from approximately 3000 feet high in 1919. On Feb. 21. 1979. ferry service returned to Port Townsend after a 40 year absence. Many buildings and houses remained uninhabited until the 1970rsquo;s when discovered by those seeking a creative atmosphere with cheap real estate and splendid scenery.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great Look at a Lively HistoryBy MMusePort Townsend has a very interesting history. Its early days were happening at the same time photography was becoming very popular and several talented photographers did a great job documenting life in the booming Victorian-era frontier seaport. The photos are great and theres a very interesting narrative with good stories and descriptions.
