It is scholarly and magisterial while at the same time remaining as "intimate" as the title describes. I am not sure which I found more moving...the haunting; stunning photographs or the written contributions from Americans of every political persuasion...George H.W. Bush; Scott Walker to Andrew Young and Jimmy Carter. There are also some very affecting essays from high school students.This is going to become one of those important Lincoln books that come around ever so often.
