The essays in Sculptors; Painters; and Italy: Italian Influence on Nineteenth-Century American Art examine the influence of Italy in the works of nineteenth-century American sculptors and painters. The focus is on their experience in Italy; their relationship with local workmen; their contact with Italian artists such as the Tuscan Macchiaioli; and the impact of their Italian experience on the formation of American art. The papers in the volume discuss such artists as Horatio Greenough; Thomas Cole; Hiram Powers; Henry Kirke Brown; Elihu Vedder; Edmonia Lewis; and John Singer Sargent. The essays are written by scholars from American universities and museums; and they appear in the following order: Elise Madeleine Ciregna; ldquo;rsquo; An Example in the Right Directionrsquo;: Horatio Greenoughrsquo;s Life and Work in Italyrdquo;; John F. McGuigan Jr; ldquo;rsquo;A Painterrsquo;s Paradisersquo;: Thomas Cole and His Transformative Experience in Florence; 1831-1832rdquo;; Rebecca Reynolds; ldquo;rsquo; No Ordinary Handsrsquo;: Hiram Powersrsquo; Artistic and Professionally Related Familyrdquo;; Karen Lemmey; ldquo;rsquo;I would just as soon be in Albany as Florence;rsquo; Henry Kirke Brown and the American Expatriate Colonies in Italy; 1842-1846rdquo;; Mary K. An insider look for an inside or outsiderBy Thad WardMr. Gibbs breaks down downtown. urban and historic retail development into easy-to-understand language and frames it in a way that makes a whole lot of sense. He draws on his vast experience in the trade. You can gauge his success by experiencing the areas he has transformed. If you match these wonderful places with the logic that unfolds in his book you gain a respect that borders on awe. This guy really know what he is talking about and can explain it!The book is laid out like his downtowns - clear and logical. You travel through the pages as you would walk down one of his main thoroughfares. enjoying the view and getting what you need and want. The breakthrough moment comes when you understand how one can transform a sleepy historic town with all its limitations into a vibrant and quaint town center which everyone enjoys. by turning those limitations into opportunities. The best part if the book is Mr. Gibbs himself. He can actually explain how retail development can be a successful art form. As our love for small town nostalgia increases and our desire for modern conveniences grows. we will be hearing a lot from Mr. Gibbs over the next decades.I am not going to spoil this review by giving away his logic here. You must get your hands on this book and immerse yourself. Its worth it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
