However; a musician is different. A musician must speak to who we are...whatever that might be. While the book reads like an academic study; it is fortunately reasonably free of jargon. As Miller makes the trek from authentic women singers; to boybands; to old rock and rollers; to gangstas and queers; only to arrive back where she started; contrasting lesbian Beth Ditto and Lady Gaga; she makes some interesting observations and connections but never really helps us understand why being authentic was important in the first place. The old saying goes that clothes make the man (or woman)--why? At some point; musicians made more money if they also wrote the song. So they don the clothes to emphasize the point; perhaps profiting from this as well. But can death be defied if we copywrite who we are? Isnt it interesting that when Michael Jackson died so many people could tell you a story about their personal history that was somehow connected to the time in which they heard one of his songs? Theres no historical insight here--though sociologically interesting.
